SDBC Weekly Update

Amazon Smile

Do you shop at Amazon.com? If so, it's easy for you to help SDBC receive donations from Amazon to SDBC. Just use the "Amazon Smile” charitable process in your account. Amazon Smile funnels a small percentage of their eligible purchase revenue to SDBC if you activate Amazon Smile in your account and choose “San Diego Bicycle Club” as the beneficiary nonprofit.

Instead of logging in through "amazon.com" you log-in through “smile.amazon.com.” Very easy to use. It is EXACTLY the same shopping experience. Nothing changes except SDBC receives contributions from Amazon.

    From the President
    Celebrating 75! ~ Our Women's Team

What a great year 2021 promises to be - if we can get past “The Rona” - that’s what a friend of mine from Florida calls it.

SDBC has been racing for 75 years, and 2021 might just be our best year ever. Take our Women’s Team…

Nine years ago our Women's Team – as well as our Men’s 1-2 Team – was all but gone. Most of women had left when the former Men’s 1-2 Director left SDBC. Our Sponsorship Director had resigned, and our FITT Director was about to. Jim Ring had just become president, and I the Club’s new treasurer. We had some money in the bank, but many of our income sources were at severe risk. What a mess!

Bea Dormoy stepped into the breach, taking control of the remnants of the Women’s team, working steadily for several years to rebuild it. We owe a huge debt to Bea – she built the foundation. THANKS BEA!

Esther Walker took over for her, continuing to attract new racers, expanding all categories, and giving team members not only the chance to race but to build lasting friendships. THANKS ESTHER!

Now, in 2021, we have 37 members - our largest group of women in SDBC history; a living tribute to Bea and Esther.

We’ve grown so much we’ve had to split the management of the teams, which now have two directors. While still racing for us, Esther has turned over the reins to Katherine Nadler (Cat 1-2-3) and Beril Polat (Cat 4 - Masters). Very exciting! SDBC is thriving while others are fading.

Through it all, the incredible participation of each and every one of you, and your financial support, is what’s kept us at the front of the pack. Running this great 501(c)(3) charitable organization is not a race; there is never a finish line. Every year our racing teams build on the past, and so does our management team of volunteers.

Folks please believe me when I say we need you now more than ever. We’re a riding club that isn’t riding, and a racing club that isn’t racing. It’d be all to ease to lose momentum. Please don’t let that happen. There are four things you can do now right now:

    RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP
Many clubs are seeing a drop in renewals. Not SDBC. Our renewal rate went up in 2020. Yes, our overall membership has dropped but that’s because we count on our Saturday rides to attract new members. And we had no Saturday rides for 9+ months last year. Your renewal now is more important than ever!

    thermometer-for-14-jan DONATE
Of course, Title sponsors pay $15,000 for the privilege, and that’s what we’re raising. Your donation at of any amount is truly appreciated and helps us reach our $15,000 goal.

    Click donate

    JOIN THE PRESIDENT'S CLUB
SDBC President Mike McLaughlin invites you to join him in “The President’s Club” by making a donation of $1,000 or more. The Club is limited to 10 people and businesses, all helping raise $10,000 towards the Title Sponsorship.

Wait 'til you hear about our other 2021 teams! You'll understand why I believe... That with your help, 2021 will be the best year ever!

75 will be our best year ever. LET’S ROLL!

    Saturday Rides Status

Southern California is currently under a State of California Stay-at-Home mandate. The County of San Diego's current health order reflects the stricter rules. To remain in compliance, the SDBC Saturday Rides will continue to be suspended. We encourage you to continue riding for your physical and mental health while keeping in mind the stricter guidelines just issued. This is the verbiage taken from the State's website:

"Members of the same household are encouraged to maintain physical and mental health by safely going to a park, a beach, hike, walk, or bike ride with members of their own household. Californians are also encouraged to keep connected with loved ones virtually."

Please do not gather at UC Cyclery on Saturday mornings. If you choose to ride with a friend or two from there, please leave the parking area quickly and do not form large groups. Let's all stay healthy and safe while we ride out this recent surge in the pandemic.
