SDBC Weekly Update

Amazon Smile

Do you shop at Amazon.com? If so, it's easy for you to help SDBC receive donations from Amazon to SDBC. Just use the "Amazon Smile” charitable process in your account. Amazon Smile funnels a small percentage of their eligible purchase revenue to SDBC if you activate Amazon Smile in your account and choose “San Diego Bicycle Club” as the beneficiary nonprofit.

Instead of logging in through "amazon.com" you log-in through “smile.amazon.com.” Very easy to use. It is EXACTLY the same shopping experience. Nothing changes except SDBC receives contributions from Amazon.

    From the President
    Celebrating 75!

    SDBC turns 75 in 2021.

For all those years our Club has grown, attracting some of the top racers in the U.S., building our Saturday ride program, getting more people on bikes, and conducting bike safety rodeos and helmet giveaways for kids. And, at last report, we are the only SoCal club still putting on races like the Barrio Logan Grand Prix and the Fiesta Island Time Trial series.

Through it all, your incredible support is what’s kept us at the front of the pack. Besides riding and racing with us when COVID restrictions are lifted, there are four things you can do now:

    RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP
Many clubs are seeing a drop in renewals. Not SDBC. Our renewal rate went up in 2020. Yes, our overall membership has dropped but that’s because we count on our Saturday rides to attract new members. And we had no Saturday rides for 9+ months last year. Your renewal now is more important than ever!

    DONATE
Of course, Title sponsors pay $15,000 for the privilege, and that’s what we’re raising. Your donation at of any amount is truly appreciated and helps us reach our $15,000 goal.

    Click donate

    JOIN THE PRESIDENT'S CLUB
SDBC President Mike McLaughlin invites you to join him in “The President’s Club” by making a donation of $1,000 or more. The Club is limited to 10 people and businesses, all helping raise $10,000 towards the Title Sponsorship.

Julius (Jay) Cunanan Killed In Crash

Long-time racer, cyclist, and biking advocate Julius (Jay) Cunanan was killed last Sunday when a motorcycle crashed into him. He was sweeping on the weekly 619 Barkada Bicycle Club ride on Otay Lakes Road, when the speeding motorcyclist hit him. Both Julius and the motorcyclist died at the scene. No other injuries were reported, and there’s no word on why the crash happened. Julius was the vice president and co-founder of the 619BCC. He was a popular figure and cycling supporter in the South Bay, and had many friends in cycling including members of SDBC and CycloVets. He was also a cat-3 racer, and competed in our Barrio Logan Grand Prix. The picture below is from 2017 when he came in 6th in the Category 5 Men’s race. He’s standing far right.

We opened our January 12th SDBC Board of Directors meeting in memory of Julius, realizing what a dangerous activity in which we are all engaged. Even more so when you can’t call for help. One witness said it took a long time for rescuers to arrive even though there were reportedly fire stations within 5 miles of the crash. The problem was poor cell phone service. To honor Julius it has been suggested solar-powered phones be installed in this popular biking area (Honey Springs / Great Western Loop). The County removed dozens of them from our freeways over the last few years. We agree. More on that another time. For now, we grieve for the Cunanan family and the members of the 619 Barkada Bicycle Club. He leaves behind a wife, children, and many friends. A Go Fund Me page for the family has been created at:

    Saturday Rides Status

Southern California is currently under a State of California Stay-at-Home mandate. The County of San Diego's current health order reflects the stricter rules. To remain in compliance, the SDBC Saturday Rides will continue to be suspended. We encourage you to continue riding for your physical and mental health while keeping in mind the stricter guidelines just issued. This is the verbiage taken from the State's website:

"Members of the same household are encouraged to maintain physical and mental health by safely going to a park, a beach, hike, walk, or bike ride with members of their own household. Californians are also encouraged to keep connected with loved ones virtually."

Please do not gather at UC Cyclery on Saturday mornings. If you choose to ride with a friend or two from there, please leave the parking area quickly and do not form large groups. Let's all stay healthy and safe while we ride out this recent surge in the pandemic.
