SDBC Weekly Update

Amazon Smile

Do you shop at Amazon.com? If so, it' easy for you to help SDBC receive donations from Amazon to SDBC. Just use the “Amazon Smile” charitable process in your account. Amazon Smile funnels a small percentage of their eligible purchase revenue to SDBC if you activate Amazon Smile in your account and choose “San Diego Bicycle Club” as the beneficiary nonprofit.

Instead of logging in through "amazon.com" you log-in through “smile.amazon.com.” Very easy to use. It is EXACTLY the same shopping experience. Nothing changes except SDBC receives contributions from Amazon.

    From the President
San Diego Bicycle Club Nominations for 2021 Officers & Directors at November and December Meetings

Club elections will be held at our December 1, 2020 Annual Membership Meeting. All positions are open. As is the Club's tradition, and in accordance with our Bylaws (Section III-C -Election of Officers and Director), a slate of candidates is being created. Most officers & directors are seeking reelection and will appear on the slate UNLESS there are other SDBC members nominated for that position. We will take nominations from the floor at (1) our November 10, 2020 Board of Directors meeting and (2) the December 1st annual Membership Meeting. At the annual meeting, all competitive positions will be pulled from the slate and members will be able to hear from each nominated candidate, and then vote for the candidate of their choice. We encourage all members who want to serve to run for election. The only requirements are (1) you be at least 18 years old, and (2) you are current with your membership dues. If you're interested in running please contact me at president@sdbc.org

A Note From the Special Events Director
San Diego Bicycle Club Special Events Update

As a result of a few factors including the Covid19 group meeting rules and the cancellation of most 2020 races , the Board of Directors have decided not to hold an annual banquet in January 2021. That will mean there will be no awards for riders in 2020 either. There is some ongoing discussion about a possible Cyclist of the Year award since the definition of that award is centered on overall contributions to the club, and there have been some significant contributions this year. Alternate ideas about special events for later in the year when things are (hopefully) getting back toward normal are being considered.

A modified Toy Contribution process for the Croc Center in place of the normal Toy Ride is being prepared. Stand by for more information soon.

There will be no fall Club Night for the normal release of the new club kit for 2021. The kit design is almost complete, it looks fabulous and will be released soon. Sizing will be arranged for those who aren't sure what size they would wear.

As are all of you, we are anxiously awaiting the time when we can start regular rides and to schedule special events for the Club.

A Note From the Training Director
San Diego Bicycle Club Saturday Rides Update

As of this week, County of San Diego health orders still prohibit "gatherings." Until we have clearance, the Club's Saturday Rides will remain suspended. The Club will restart the rides as quickly as possible once permitted.

We encourage you to ride your bikes either solo or in very small groups.  Some riders have been using UCC as a starting point and riding our usual routes. If you do so, please do not linger and form groups of more than a few cyclists.  If you wish to meet cycling friends there, please consider arriving before or after 8:30 to help reduce the number of riders leaving the parking lot at that time, or consider meeting in the vicinity.  Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Please stay healthy and safe so we can look forward to riding with you again in the future!

San Diego Bicycle Club SDBC November Fall Ride and Photo Contest

If you've missed our last 2 challenges, then you'll want to make sure to join this one!! Now that the weather has finally cooled down, and that Autumn crispness is in the air, it's time to enjoy some of our favorite Fall rides! So, go ride one or two of your favorites, or explore and make up a new route, and take some pictures along the way! The ride can be road, gravel or MTB with the following requirements listed below. The grand prize winner will receive a $100 gift certificate to Specs Optometry!!

    • Minimum 25 miles ride length for road and 15 miles for Gravel or MTB.
    • Route must be original and not one of SDBC's Saturday, holiday, or special event routes. You can include some sections of our routes but we want to see something new.
    • Include one to three photos capturing the fall theme or something cool on the route.
    • Include one sentence as to why you like this route. (Beautiful views of SD beaches, some of the best climbing SD has to offer, etc.)
    • Include a link to the route on Strava.
    • Email your submission (route link, pics, and 1 sentence about route) by December 2nd to training@sdbc.org and vicepresident@sdbc.org. Maximum two entries per member .
    • Winners will be based on the photos and creativity of the route. Extra points for "drawing a picture" with the route. Judging will be by the Training Director and Vice President. Our top ten will be selected and the grand prize will be randomly drawn from the top ten with two additional winners receiving gift cards.
    • Must be a SDBC member in good standing to be eligible for prizes.
    • By submitting your ride and pics you give us permission to use these on our SDBC website unless you expressly state you don't want them used.

We're looking forward "to seeing" what creative, fun, beautiful rides you come up with! Be safe and enjoy riding in our beautiful county.

    San Diego Bicycle ClubSDCBC Logo

    SDBC members!

CyclingSavvy is a traffic cycling education program that provides useful information and tips for even highly experienced pro riders, much less everyone else.

If what you learn doesn't save your life or at least help keep you out of the hospital, it will at least help you learn to feel more comfortable and be more safe in all kinds of traffic.

Now you are invited to a FREE one hour CyclingSavvy seminar entitled

Bike Anywhere! An Introduction to Cycling Savvy

on Wednesday, December 9, 2020, 6 PM - 7 PM. It is sponsored by SDBC and several other SoCal clubs. Add it to your calendar now so as not to forget. I look forward to seeing all of you there!

At the time of the webinar you can join with this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/8616047704490/WN_B5_UTi-LSEqUXEYzzf1rUA

If you're on Facebook please also sign up via this event link, which would be helpful so they know how many to expect: https://www.facebook.com/events/780297506149124

As a bonus, because SDBC is a sponsoring club, all SDBC members will be invited to a follow-up webinar a week later.
