SDBC Weekly Update

Amazon Smile

Do you shop at Amazon.com? If so, it' easy for you to help SDBC receive donations from Amazon to SDBC. Just use the “Amazon Smile” charitable process in your account. Amazon Smile funnels a small percentage of their eligible purchase revenue to SDBC if you activate Amazon Smile in your account and choose “San Diego Bicycle Club” as the beneficiary nonprofit.

Instead of logging in through "amazon.com" you log-in through “smile.amazon.com.” Very easy to use. It is EXACTLY the same shopping experience. Nothing changes except SDBC receives contributions from Amazon.

The ride route has traditionally been about 40 miles in distance at a moderate pace, rolling out at 8:30AM.

Red, White, & BREW Ride Notes

First and most important, give yourself more time than you think you will need to find parking and ride to the start of the ride at Eppig Brewery.  Parking will be nearly non-existent in the immediate area as people arrive early in the morning to stake out a place on Shelter Island to watch the fireworks. Metered parking in the area is enforced seven day a week including holidays.  Holiday traffic can be heavy and unpredictable, please be careful, patient, and respectful to others on the road.

Second, there are a few other areas of concern, so please be sure to listen to the pre-ride instructions.

Third, we need a ride leader for the longer route, please contact me if you are interested in helping out.

The Rides:

The more challenging route is just over 40 miles long and features a good warm-up into downtown; a gentle climb into Balboa Park; fairly fast riding heading east; a good climb up Waring Rd.; a nice downhill on Princess View to Mission Gorge Rd.; two good climbs on Mission Gorge Rd. to the west end of Santee;  a gentle return via Father Junipero Serra Trail (you can turn around and go back up Mission Gorge Rd for an additional workout;) another climb heading west; mostly flat return through Mission Valley, then back to Eppig via Liberty Station.  It should get you back a little before the start of the BBQ.

For additional mileage and climbing, just keep going straight on Scott St, go up Canon St, then Catalina to Voltaire, returning on Nimitz, taking a right on Scott St to get back to Eppig.

Here is the Strava route I rode with Tony Lowery and Michael Pelkey who also provided input on the route. https://www.strava.com/routes/19827340  There are a few slight variations from the Map My Ride file that has been posted.

Here is a Map My Ride file for the optional route:  https://www.mapmyride.com/routes/fullscreen/2555481502/

The easier ride follows Harbor Drive into National City where the Bay shore Bikeway turns onto Tidelands Ave. It continues to Trident Coffee in the Bikeway Village just off the path in Imperial Beach.  Their coffee is good, but pricier than SBCC, and they do not have much selection of food. The return route is the reverse of the way there until you reach the County Admin Building area where you must go onto the shared sidewalk/bike path and follow it until the Spanish Landing intersection where it's safe to get back onto N. Harbor Drive.  Do not attempt to ride on Harbor drive past Grape St. as it can be very dangerous with all the airport traffic. The route is a little over 38 miles long and can be shortened by turning around anywhere along the route.  Here is the Strava file from my preview ride:

A Note From the President
San Diego Bicycle Club MTB Director Opening

The Mountain Bike Team Director position is open. Nominations to fill the position were taken at the June 10, 2019 BOD meeting, and will be accepted again at the July 8, 2019 BOD meeting. The election will be held at the July meeting.

The Club’s directors and title sponsor are very much interested in expanding the team to become the “Off Road” Team, which would include dirt and gravel racers along with mountain bike racers. If you are interested in heading up this effort and managing the team, please contact me or Vice President Renee Robinson for details.

To qualify as a director, Club by-laws say, "A Director must be a natural person of the age of majority who is a Member in good standing of SDBC at the time of the election."
