SDBC Weekly Update

Amazon Smile

Do you shop at Amazon.com? If so, it' easy for you to help SDBC receive donations from Amazon to SDBC. Just use the “Amazon Smile” charitable process in your account. Amazon Smile funnels a small percentage of their eligible purchase revenue to SDBC if you activate Amazon Smile in your account and choose “San Diego Bicycle Club” as the beneficiary nonprofit.

Instead of logging in through "amazon.com" you log-in through “smile.amazon.com.” Very easy to use. It is EXACTLY the same shopping experience. Nothing changes except SDBC receives contributions from Amazon.

Monthly Skills
Training Clinic
This week-June 1st

SDBC Life Member, longtime Development Ride Leader, and former SDBC racer, Lee Driver, leads a skills clinic on the first Saturday of every month open to all.

The skills session of around 45 minutes will be followed by a 24 to 30 mile ride led by a SDBC Ride Leader. The topics may vary each month tailored to the skill set of those in attendance. Examples of skills to be discussed include:

  • Proximity riding including touching/bumping
  • Hand positioning
  • Tire dusting
  • Riding a thrown chain back on
  • Effectively training with a heart rate monitor
  • Hill interval training
  • Isolated-leg exercises
  • Properly equipping your bike for flats and roadside repairs
  • Dressing for varying temperatures
  • Rules of the road
  • Steering/cornering/braking
  • Effective use of gears
  • And other topics brought up by the attendees.

Not all skills will be taught each month.  In case of rain, the clinic will be conducted the following week.

A Note From the President
San Diego Bicycle Club Club Photo and New Location

Our annual Club Photo will be taken Saturday, June 15th before the rides roll-out.  The Club has been notified that our traditional location on Eastgate and Towne Center Dr is no longer available.

SDBC Vice President Renee Robinson and Training Director Charlie Sykes are looking for a new location now.  It has to be in the UCSD/UTC area, BEFORE going down the bike path.

If you have suggestions please talk to them or email them at vicepresident@sdbc.org and training@sdbc.org.

If we can’t find a spot we’ll take it at UC Cyclery.

Thanks!

5th Annual SDBC Memorial Day Ride
San Diego Bicycle Club Ride Report

Click for larger image

Our 5th Annual Memorial Day Ride was well-led by SDBC Ride Leaders Michael Pelkey, Pete Kane, Ed Leonard, Charlie Sykes, Cory Sakaguchi, and Trish Bazan, with additional assistance from the many riders that helped keep the group cohesive.

From our starting point at our sponsor, UC Cyclery, we rolled down to the Rose Canyon Bike Path, up Soledad Mountain Road, descending Nautilus to Windansea, and hugging the coast, eventually heading out to Ocean Beach, also along the shore, until we got to the always fun & twisty Alley Route aptly led by Pete.

Following, after Sunset Cliffs, we had Ladera, Moana, and the tail end of the Hill Street climb which took us to our turn around point on Catalina Blvd. in Pt. Loma. Then a fast downhill return on Catalina, the up & down of Santa Barbara St. to Santa Monica St., and down to Newbreak Coffee by the beach in Ocean Beach. Camaraderie followed for those that chose to stop.

Thanks to Richard Lee for the pic and thanks to all who were able to participate.

Along with our Saturday Club Rides and our racers in their pursuit of victory, SDBC has a number of events throughout the year such as this that help bring us together and further the fun of cycling in beautiful San Diego.

We thank all those that served our country in uniform, and those that contribute in making SDBC a great cycling club, and our many sponsors for their support.

Michael Pelkey
SDBC Ride Leader
