SDBC Weekly Update

Amazon Smile

Do you shop at Amazon.com? If so, it’s easy for you to help SDBC receive donations from Amazon to SDBC. Just use the “Amazon Smile” charitable process in your account. Amazon Smile funnels a small percentage of their eligible purchase revenue to SDBC if you activate Amazon Smile in your account and choose “San Diego Bicycle Club” as the beneficiary nonprofit.

Instead of logging in through "amazon.com" you log-in through “smile.amazon.com.”  Very easy to use. It is EXACTLY the same shopping experience.  Nothing changes except SDBC receives contributions from Amazon.

Annual SDBC Borrego Springs Ride and Camp
SDBC Logo
Borrego Ride and Camp
October 27-28

41 riders and campers gathered at the Borrego Palm Canyon Campground for the annual SDBC event. 18 arrived by bike, 23 by car. This is the first time drivers outnumbered riders. I think riders have figured out they can still get dinner, with freshly baked, warm, pineapple upside down cake whether they ride from San Diego or not. There were a few new faces in the group this year.

Despite the heat, riders all had a good time. Some chose the dirt road of Black Canyon as an alternate route, meaning they got to ride into Borrego via Montezuma Valley Road. That same group chose another alternate Sunday, giving them a few extra miles and another 1,000 feet of climbing. (13,100 feet in 2 days.)

The sag drivers, and any of the 18 not making the return trip, had a great 30 mile meander around the valley Sunday morning before heading home.

Thanks to all the participants for pitching in to get dinner on the table, breakfast out, and camp cleaned up and cars loaded. Thanks to sag drivers for hauling all the gear.

A Note From The Bike Coalition Liaison

San Diego Bicycle ClubSDCBC Logo

  • If you're ever nervous in traffic (and who isn't?) you can almost certainly benefit from taking a step back and thinking about traffic cycling dynamics and safety. The CyclingSavvy program is the best and my friends there now offer FREE membership which includes access to their Essentials course. Please, check out their totally revamped website, and let me know what you think!
    http://www.cyclingsavvy.org
  • Coalition Board of directors elections are coming. All Coalition members can vote, which means all SDBC members can vote. Watch your email Inbox for the electronic ballot.
  • This is the first serious article I've ever seen about my favorite cycling topic - the legality and safety of bicyclists using the full lane -  in any prominent general media. Forbes! Please read.

Join SDBC at Padres Pedal
the Cause on
November 17, 2018

Padres Pedal the Cause is a local nonprofit that seeks to fund cancer research that will lead to increased survivorship and ultimately, cures for cancer. Their biggest fundraising effort is an annual cycling event at Petco Park – and we are happy to announce that SDBC has created a team this event.

How can you participate:

There is Cycling (4 routes – including 25, 55, 88 and 100 miles, all going over the Coronado Bridge and finishing on Centerfield.), 5K walk/run, Kids Challenge (closed bike loop) or Stationary Bike – all events end on the field at Petco Park with free food & beverage.  There are also volunteer opportunities.

Click here for all participation options, which also includes registration and fundraising info at the bottom.

The beneficiaries:

Every dollar participants raise goes directly to the following beneficiaries:  Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute and Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego.

Join the SDBC team:

Join the team by clicking here or visiting gopedal.org/SDBC. Please contact Lauren Diaz, who works for Padres Pedal the Cause and is a member of the SDBC Women’s race team, at Lauren@gopedal.org with any questions.
