SDBC Weekly Update

Amazon Smile

Do you shop at Amazon.com? If so, it’s easy for you to help SDBC receive donations from Amazon to SDBC. Just use the “Amazon Smile” charitable process in your account. Amazon Smile funnels a small percentage of their eligible purchase revenue to SDBC if you activate Amazon Smile in your account and choose “San Diego Bicycle Club” as the beneficiary nonprofit.

Instead of logging in through "amazon.com" you log-in through “smile.amazon.com.”  Very easy to use. It is EXACTLY the same shopping experience.  Nothing changes except SDBC receives contributions from Amazon.

Culture Change, and How You Can Help

Imagine how much safer, easier, calmer and more appealing cycling would be in the U.S. if every law enforcement officer (LEO), motorist and cyclist took 11 minutes to view this new CyclingSavvy video addressed primarily to LEOs.

Check it out and see how you can help the American Bicycling Education Association change our culture so that "drivers of bicycles are expected and respected as a normal part of traffic on all of our roads, regardless of the absence or availability of bicycle-specific infrastructure."

Bike Build Report

When Christopher Stanton, of Ghisallo Cycling Initiative, contacted SDBC for volunteers for a charity bike build, 12 members answered the call.

The event took place on the USS Midway as a team building event for a conference of health care related industries. Our job as volunteers was to supervise the teams of builders, most with no bike expertise, to ensure that bikes were correctly put together. Completed bikes were donated to a Navy child development center, to be given to service members' children. 40 bikes were neatly laid out on tables, with the necessary tools, ready and waiting. Waiting while conference attendees and SDBC volunteers enjoyed the full buffet, band and bar on the flight deck.

One volunteer was heard saying, "I think this is a bait and switch. No one is giving up the party upstairs to build bikes. We are going to have to do it ourselves." But, when Christopher made his pitch, the crowd moved below deck and the building began. In just under an hour, bikes were built and lined up ready to go.

A fun time was had by all. Thank you to everyone who helped.

Oh, yeah, 'Tom Cruise' was among the volunteers as well.
