SDBC 2016 Sponsors

We have some new sponsors this year - Chrome Dome Caps, Overland & Shanahan Wealth Advisors, Sheffield Platers, Purely Cloud, and Pro Athlete Law Group.

Emerald Textiles will continue as our title sponsor, UC Cyclery is continuing as our official bike club and sponsor of the men's and women's Cat 1/2 teams, and many sponsors that have supported us for years will continue to support us this year.

Please support our sponsors. Without them SDBC would not be able to maintain the racing teams and other activities that we have all enjoyed. Visit the sponsors page on the SDBC web site to view more information about each of our sponsors or click the logos to go the specific sponsor's web site.

SDBC Sunday Ride, 4/3

San Diego Bicycle Club

A Ride Into Rancho Santa Fe

Leaves UC Cyclery at 8:30, led by SDBC member, with the focus on riding 2x2, and a stop at our coffee shop sponsor, Java Depot, in Solana Beach before return.

42 miles approximately, route determined by participants. As simple as an SDBC standard route or some variation thereof. You decide!

Bring two bottles of fluid and be ready to roll at 8:30. It would be nice if someone takes a group pic and emails it to me. I will then send it out to those riders that I can identify.

Thanks, and have a safe & fun ride.

2016 Barrio Logan Grand Prix Race Director’s Report
San Diego Bicycle Club 2016 Barrio Logan
Saturday, May 7

It’s that time of year again and planning and preparations for the 2016, 20th Annual Barrio Logan Grand Prix are in full swing! Currently we are working hard to ensure this year’s will stand up to if not surpass, it’s outstanding reputation as one of Southern California’s premier bicycle races! Again this year we will be the SCNCA Junior Criterium Championships and part of USA Cycling’s Road Development Race Series. Plus we will feature races for Elite Men and Women, Master’s and our always popular Kid’s Races! New this year we will be having a Bicycle Safety Rodeo and the Helmet Give away at Cesar Chavez Park on San Diego Bay!

Right now we are working feverishly on raising the $6000. Cash prize list committed to this year’s race. But we need your help! If you have any leads on someone or a business who you believe might like to sponsor the race (how about you???) please give me a call. Everyone loves a race with lots of “primes”, SDBC has over 400 members, if each member acquired just one prime, this year’s Barrio Logan Grand Prix could give out 400 prime prizes!!! Primes can be just about anything: gift certificates, dinners, clothing, services, bike parts, auto parts, gift cards, cash… let’s get creative!

Speaking of needing your help; it’s time to start signing up for one of the many race day volunteer positions. Positions available are in the areas of; registration, course set-up and tear-down, course marshalling, hospitality, expo area, equipment truck driver, etc.

So if you have any ideas on sponsorship, or you want to volunteer, please give me a call (619-239-4321) or you can reach me on the World Wide Web at: Ralph@mgeracing,com

See ya at the races,
Ralph Elliott, 2015 BLGP Race Director

3rd Annual Gordy Shields Memorial Ride

San Diego Bicycle Club

Sunday, 4/24
There will be a short advocacy at 8:20 AM.
Be ready to roll at 8:30 AM.

For the last two years the San Diego Bicycle Club has participated in the commemoration of Gordy Shields long-time advocacy of bicycling on "Gordy Shields Day," as established by Donna Frye, SD Council Member, on April 10, 2010. This is a pleasant ride which includes members of our club and others. Last year there were 75 cyclists participating in this event.

Gordy Shields Memorial Ride

Once again, San Diego Cyclo-Vets, the club in which Gordy was a member, will be hosting the event and we’re anticipating an even bigger turnout. The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition will also be represented, all SD cycling clubs have been invited to participate, and we hope to have another strong showing from members of SDBC.

It will begin and end at Pepper Park in National City on April 24th at 8:30 a.m. and will proceed over the Gordy Shields Bridge, out around the Bayshore Bikeway to Coronado and back. In addition, prior to the ride, there will be a short advocacy for cycling in Gordy’s name, including SD County Supervisor Greg Cox, a good friend of Gordy’s, who will be pleased to say a few words in his behalf before roll out.

* There will be no SDBC Sunday Ride leaving from UC Cyclery on Sunday, 4/24.

Ride start & finish: Pepper Park, 3299 Tidelands Ave., in National City, near the Gordy Shields Bridge at the Sweetwater River. The ride will take cyclists along the Silver Strand in Imperial Beach into Coronado and back.

The route is about 35 miles - MapMyRide Route

Please make it a point to come along to recognize your support for all that Gordy did for our wonderful sport of cycling.

*** There will be free commemorative Gordy water bottles given to all.

Please make it a point to come along an show your support for all that Gordy did for our wonderful sport of cycling.

A Note from the Treasurer

San Diego Bicycle Club SDBC is now a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

We received the IRS determination letter a few days ago. This means that donations made to SDBC are deductible from your taxes.

Effective date was December 3, 2015. IMO - if you drive your car to the Saturday rides, or to board meetings, or to other SDBC events where you will be donating your time, you may deduct the mileage. Your SDBC membership dues might also be deductible. Please confirm this with your accountant/tax preparer.

If you work for a company that offers matching funds for charitable contributions, ask your HR department to include the San Diego Bicycle Club as a qualified 501(c)(3). We can supply your company with a copy of the IRS determination letter.

A Note From The Bike Coalition Liaison

SDBC LogoSDCBC Logo

Safety Tip of the Week:

Let motorists know what we're doing... don't keep it a secret!

Every time we approach a left turn or merge, everyone, especially those in the back, should be signaling left early so motorists know what we're up to.  They can't read our minds and don't know our route.  Let them know well before we start moving over.  Too often the front starts moving left after a motorist has already committed to passing on the left.  It can be a mess, at best, dangerous at worst. The bigger the group, the sooner we should start signaling.

And when those in the back can see it's clear, say so.  And pass it on.  Do this right and the whole group moves over cohesively fairly quickly looking like a bunch of pros instead of a bunch of Freds like me.

HELP FIX THE PROBLEMS ON SAN DIEGUITO ROAD:

Here is the link to the City of San Diego website to report street problems like the cracks, potholes and bumps on San Dieguito Road between Caminito Pacifica Trail and Winland Hills:

Remember: your SDBC membership includes membership in the San Diego County Bike Coalition which includes a number of benefits. See the  coalition website at sdbikecoalition.org.
