A Note From The Bike Coalition Liaison

SDBC Logo Remember, your SDBC membership includes membership in the San Diego County Bike Coalition which includes a number of benefits. See the new coalition website at http://sdbikecoalition.org.

Safety tip of the week: Take a traffic cycling class from the Bike Coalition! Learn the latest about cycling safely in traffic! Everyone is surprised how much they learn at these courses - it really gets you to think about your interaction with motorists differently.

There are six Smart Cycling (aka TS 101) sessions open with the classrooms at Qualcomm and road sessions starting from Mira Mesa Rec center.

To register, just go to http://sdbikecoalition.org and view the Events Calendar (scroll down on the right), select the correct month and the dates have a blue dot on them. They are the first Tuesday of each odd month and the following Saturday. Or just click the direct registration link.

This is scheduled bimonthly for calendar year 2016 - Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Sep, Nov and the fee is $25.

28th Annual SDBC Light Up A Life Holiday Toy Ride

Click for larger imagePhoto courtesy of Ricard Lee

Every year the Salvation Army invites hundreds of San Diego families to select from the toys collected at the holiday distribution center.

On Saturday, December 12, the San Diego Bicycle Club hosted its Annual Light Up a Life Holiday Toy Ride with Santa (long-time SDBC member and initiator of the event, Ralph Elliott) once again leading a throng of cyclists (223), on a mission to deliver toys to needy children. As in previous years, the ride initiated at 8:30 a.m. from SDBC sponsor UC Cyclery in La Jolla, and then proceeded east to the Salvation Army Kroc Center at 6845 University Ave, approximately a 20 mile ride each way. Many participants chose to decorate their bikes and were in costume, adding to the festive holiday spirit, and before roll out, and with Santa MC-ing, prizes were awarded for the best decorated male, female, junior, and tandem riders. Riders chose to either deposit their toys in support vans to be delivered at the center, or to carry their toys to be dropped off at the collection boxes on site.

The weather was obliging, though chilly at the start, and with the needed assistance from SDBC members as ride marshals ensuring that the whole group made it through intersections, the event went off without a hitch. And there was wonderful support from several SAG vehicles, particularly from Javi Rodriquez, with his Ride with Javi support van following at the tail end of the group.

We arrived at Salvation Army around 10:15, dropped off our toys, and were then treated to complimentary coffee and tasteful pastries, after which our group photo was taken.

The return route is always fun heading back on El Cajon Blvd with many cars honking, pedestrians waving, and children cheering to Santa and "his band of elves" on their merry way back home.

Besides a very healthy turnout with members of the San Diego Bicycle Club, other cycling clubs represented included the aforementioned Ride with Javi Cycling Club, the SD Cyclo-Vets, Major Taylor Cycling Club San Diego, Blind Stokers Club, UCC, Adams Ave Bikes, Skyflash p/b Zoca, SD Recyclers, Descenders Cycling Club, Mira Mesa Cycling Club, North County Cycling Club, Sub 5, and the as yet two-member team from North Park, Vacation Forever. :)

Many riders took pictures that have been posted on the web, including Richard Lee, Pete Kane, and others, and then there is that FINE Dehnis DelaCruz video.

Take a gander! (YouTube video link)
