Gordy Shields Memorial Bicycle Ride

San Diego Bicycle Club

Sunday, 4/19

The 2nd annual Gordy Shields Memorial Ride took place at Pepper Park last Sunday, April 19th. The event started out with presentations that included; Gordy's long time close friend is Chuck Gilbert, Stephan Vance, a member of the SDCBC currently working on the Bayshore Bikeway, Pat Murray, representing SDBC who read the Proclamation of Gordy Shields Day, and co-organizer David Nichols (Purple Dave) from Cyclovets. Snacks and commemorative T-Shirts were distributed to all.

Gordy Shields Memorial Ride

SDBC riders in attendance included Pat Murray, Tom Welch, Linda & Tom Webb, Tony Lowery, Melinda Medina, Richard Lee (member of both SDBC & SD Cyclo-Vets), Cory Sakaguchi, Michael Pelkey, and Stuart Sale. As well, new rider and soon-to-be SDBC Saturday Ride attendee Monica Gibe hung out with our bunch. We took off around 8:40 and, while leisurely at first, soon faster riders slowly started distancing themselves from the main group. Many eventually moved to Silver Strand Blvd in lieu of the bike path to enable uninterrupted riding, and single pacelines were formed heading into the City of Coronado. A number of riders went to the end of the Strand and turned around but a fair amount of us regrouped at the Ferry Landing, with a stop at Coronado Coffee Company, before retracing our route back, and this time with the wind behind us. After a while the 27+ mph pace set by velodrome hounds, Nerius Landys & Pat Murray, on Nerius' tandem, took its toll, and one by one we dropped off, not seeing them again until we were back at Pepper Park.

All in all a great time and a worthy tribute to a SD cycling legend. And yes, if you look closely you'll see that zany pic of Gordy is the image on our tee shirts!

Next year's ride is planned for either April 17th or the 25th. Come out for a great time!

A Note From The Bike Coalition Liaison

SDBC Logo Remember, SDBC membership includes membership in the San Diego County Bike Coalition which includes a number of benefits. See the new coalition website at http://sdbikecoalition.org.

Safety tip of the week: Don't get in a drive out crash! We talked about developing the habit to look back over your left shoulder whenever approaching any intersection, or driveway, and moving left out of the vulnerable edge position, to avoid getting right hooked or left crossed.

Well, guess what? The same practice helps avoid the drive out crash, like this one: http://tinyurl.com/driveout. By riding well out in the traffic lane, you’re not only more conspicuous and less likely to be overlooked, you have more time and space to deal with such a hazard.

19th Annual Barrio Logan Grand Prix

SDBC

2015 Barrio Logan
Saturday, May 2

The 19th annual Barrio Logan Grand Prix Satuday May 2, 2015, is only a week away and you don't want to miss it!

Join in the thrill of fast-paced bicycle racing by pro racers, top-level amateurs, and a fun children's cycling event. The Barrio Logan Grand Prix has become one of Southern California's largest cycling events. It is a San Diego community event held in conjunction with the Logan Heights Family Health Center Health Fair.

Spectators are treated to numerous views of the racers along city streets in the Barrio Logan area during the races that are held throughout the day.

Register for the race on USA Cycling's website. Online registration closes on April 29th at 11:45pm

The course is a 0.8 mile, fairly flat, fast and challenging "figure eight" course through the streets of historic Barrio Logan, downtown San Diego.

Race Flyers

There is a $6000 cash prize list committed to this year’s race. But we need your help! If you have any leads on someone or a business who you believe might like to sponsor the race (how about you???) please give me a call. Everyone loves a race with lots of “primes”, SDBC has over 400 members, if each member acquired just one prime, this year’s Barrio Logan Grand Prix could give out 400 prime prizes!!! Primes can be just about anything: gift certificates, dinners, clothing, services, bike parts, auto parts, gift cards, cash… let’s get creative!

So if you have any ideas on sponsorship, or you want to volunteer, please give me a call (619-239-4321) or you can reach me on the World Wide Web at: Ralph@mgeracing,com
