Gordy Shields Memorial Bicycle Ride |
This Sunday, 4/19 - 8:00 a.m.
|
Last year the San Diego Bicycle Club inaugurated the commemoration of Gordy’s long-time advocacy of bicycling on "Gordy Shields Day," as established by Donna Frye, SD Councilmember, on April 10, 2010, with a pleasant ride which started & ended at Grossmont College, and included members of our club and others.
This year, San Diego Cyclo-Vets, the club in which Gordy was a member, will be hosting the event and we’re looking for an even bigger turnout. The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition will also be represented, and all SD cycling clubs have been invited to participate, and we hope to have another strong showing from members of SDBC.
* There will be no SDBC Sunday Ride leaving from UC Cyclery this Sunday.
The length of the Bayshore Bikeway will be our route - we will depart Pepper Park and travel south through the South Bay cities onto the
Silver Strand and retrace our route back to Pepper Park. The duration of the ride will be determined by the slowest rider. No doubt there will be speedsters that will finish in one hour,
however, at a conversational pace, the event will likely wrap up, and folks be back to their cars, in 2.5 to 3 hours.8:20-11:00ish
Ride start & finish: Pepper Park, 3299 Tidelands Ave., in National City, near the Gordy Shields Bridge at the Sweetwater River. The ride will take cyclists along the Silver Strand in Imperial Beach into Coronado and back.
Please make it a point to come along to recognize your support for all that Gordy did for our wonderful sport of cycling.
*** Free t-shirts to the first 70 participants, so be there early if you hope to get one!

A Note From The Bike Coalition Liaison |
Remember, SDBC membership includes membership in the San Diego County Bike Coalition which includes a number of benefits. See the new coalition website at http://sdbikecoalition.org.
Safety tip of the week: Don't get in a drive out crash! For the last two weeks we talked about developing the habit to look back over your left shoulder whenever approaching any intersection, or driveway, and moving left out of the vulnerable edge position, to avoid getting right hooked or left crossed.
Well, guess what? The same practice helps avoid the drive out crash, like this one: http://tinyurl.com/driveout. By riding well out in the traffic lane, you’re not only more conspicuous and less likely to be overlooked, you have more time and space to deal with such a hazard.

2015 Barrio Logan Grand Prix Race Director’s Report |
2015 Barrio Logan Saturday, May 2
|
It’s that time of year again and planning and preparations for the 2015, 19th Annual Barrio Logan Grand Prix are in full swing! Currently we are working hard to ensure this year’s will stand up to if not surpass, it’s outstanding reputation as one of Southern California’s premier bicycle races! Again this year we will be the SCNCA Junior Criterium Championships and part of USA Cycling’s Road Development Race Series. Plus we will feature races for Elite Men and Women, Master’s and our always popular Kid’s Races! New this year we will be having a Bicycle Safety Rodeo and the Helmet Give away at Cesar Chavez Park on San Diego Bay!
Right now we are working feverishly on raising the $6000. Cash prize list committed to this year’s race. But we need your help! If you have any leads on someone or a business who you believe might like to sponsor the race (how about you???) please give me a call. Everyone loves a race with lots of “primes”, SDBC has over 400 members, if each member acquired just one prime, this year’s Barrio Logan Grand Prix could give out 400 prime prizes!!! Primes can be just about anything: gift certificates, dinners, clothing, services, bike parts, auto parts, gift cards, cash… let’s get creative!
Speaking of needing your help; it’s time to start signing up for one of the many race day volunteer positions. Positions available are in the areas of; registration, course set-up and tear-down, course marshalling, hospitality, expo area, equipment truck driver, etc.
So if you have any ideas on sponsorship, or you want to volunteer, please give me a call (619-239-4321) or you can reach me on the World Wide Web at: Ralph@mgeracing,com

SDBC Sunday Ride, 4/19 |
2nd Annual Gordy Shields Memorial Bicycle Ride
|
* See special announcement in the Weekly about this event.
There will be no Sunday Ride leaving from UC Cyclery this week.
We had a good showing of riders for the inaugural Gordy Shield Memorial Ride last year which SDBC hosted, along with the participation of SD Cyclo-Vets, and this year, with the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition aboard, we hope to have an even greater turnout. This will be a fun ride in memory of a local cycling legend and long-time cycling advocate who did much for the benefit of all cyclists in San Diego and beyond.
Please join us. We welcome your participation!
Thank you, Michael Pelkey

SDBC 2015 Club Photo |
SDBC 2015 Club Photo will be on June 13th!
Save the date as we'd like to have a great turnout!
Everyone in the photo should be wearing the new 2015 kit.
If you haven't ordered your kit yet, what are you waiting for? Not sure of your size? The Pactimo fit kit will be available to try on for sizing at the Club Night at UC Cyclery on Monday March 16.
Clothing can be ordered here: http://sdbc.org/sdbc-clothing/
Orders take about 6 weeks to receive, so you still have time to get your order in and have it in time for the club photo!
