In this Issue |
This Sunday, April 20th, is the Gordy Shields Memorial Ride. Gordy was dedicated to the biking community and worked hard to promote safe cycling and to encourage bike paths where there could be paths and bike lanes when there couldn’t be. It is also Easter Sunday, but you'll be back in time to particiapate in any other activities you had planned.

Join us April 20th for The Gordy Shields Memorial Ride
A ride in honor of cycling advocate Gordy Shields.
April 20th is the date past city council woman, Donna Frye, declared as "Gordy Shields Day" in honor of all his work on the Bayshore Bikeway and resurfacing of Fiesta Island Perimeter Rd. It is also the anniversary of his birthday since his passing last June 2013. It is also EASTER SUNDAY.
To remember his advocacy for our cycling community we are planning a ride from Grossmont College to Fiesta Island and back with a stop at Rubio's on Mission Gorge for refueling.
The route is about 50 miles. Arrive at 7:45 AM and be ready to roll at 8 AM. We will depart promptly at 8 AM from the Flagpole turnabout in front of Grossmont College. (Address: 8800 Grossmont College Dr. El Cajon 92020 - LOTS OF FREE PARKING ON CAMPUS - Don't worry about getting a ticket!) Traveling on a safe route between the San Diego River and Fashion Valley Road, we plan to roll onto Fiesta Island about 9:30. The lunch stop should take place at approximately 11-11:30 AM and we will plan on being back to the college at around 12:30-1 PM. This ride is in no way associated with Grossmont College or employees. It is a fun ride at a conversational pace. We will help with issues as they may arise, but ask that you arrive with a mechanically sound bicycle and your own equipment to service any issues that could come up.
Note: The SDBC Sunday Ride will participate in this event and there will be no Sunday ride leaving from UC Cyclery. As SDBC members, we may be called upon to assist in ride leader duties if the group is large.

We Owe Someone $100. Is it you? |
During the March Club Night raffle we gave away more than $1,200 worth of prizes. The grand prize was $200 to Toast and Acqua al 2. However, we only had a $100 certificate in the envelope. We still owe the winner a second $100 certificate. We know what you look like, we just don't have your name. So if that's you please pick it up from Treasurer/Training Director Mike McLaughlin before any Saturday ride. |

It's been a couple of years since we had a club photo so we plan to accomplish this on June 7th. If you do not have the club kit for this year you need to place your order by April 27th to have it in time for the photo.
We would like to have as many members as possible in the photo. This is important when reaching out to potential sponsors so mark your calendar and be prepared to bring your brightest smiles. |

Tour de Cure Ride Marshals Needed |
UC Cyclery is sponsoring the American Diabetes Association's Tour de Cure on May 17th. The Association is hoping SDBC can provide as many as 25 Ride Marshals for the Tour. If you know anyone with Type II Diabetes, it can be devastating. My sisters health has been ruined for many years. If you can give a few hours, I highly recommend helping in this simple way on May 17.
They need ride marshals for each of four ride distances; 7, 26, 62 and 100 miles. For some reason the shorter distances are more difficult to find Ride Marshals. You will ride with the participants, offering encouragement, sharing your passion for the sport and helping with minor mechanical problems if needed. There will be a complimentary lunch for volunteers at the after ride party. This is a great opportunity to help our friends at UC Cyclery make this year's Tour de Cure the best ever and find that cure for diabetes. Please contact Rod at rods.1@hotmail.com. State which ride length you wish to do, and your contact information.

New Summer SDBC White Jersey
A white summer jersey has been released in the Men's Ascent AIR, Men's Summit Pro, Women's Ascent AIR styles.
Visit the Pactimo store to order. |
The 2014 kit design is shown below - larger images are now available by clicking on each view. |
|
The Pactimo store is open. To access the Team Store from the club web site, click on Members, then SDBC Clothing, and follow the directions on the page. If this is the first time you have ordered clothing from Pactimo, you will need to create your personal account.
Please be sure of your sizing. Pactimo and SDBC are NOT responsible if you order the wrong size. Use the following link to access the Pactimo Custom Clothing sizing chart.
A Note On Pricing
The clothing committee worked very hard in negotiating prices with Pactimo. Despite almost across-the-board price increases on garments, we're keeping the prices of many popular items the same as last year. In cases where we have raised prices, we have kept the increase as small as possible.

Former SDBC Racer Advanced to Cat 1
One of SDBC's alumna has made it to Cat 1. Sarah Carroll came up through the Development rides from 2008-2010 and graduated to the B ride. Bea took Sarah under her wing over the winter of 2009-2010 to prepare her for the race season and should be proud of what she's helped Sarah accomplish.
Sarah is yet another great example of the club working to identify riders, plant the idea to start racing and then mentoring them into the peloton.Click here to see the profile from the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance that was featured about Sarah's racing career and she mentions starting out with SDBC. |

Bikes for Birthdays
Remember the time you received your first bike? Most of us do. It was an exciting moment that allowed us to accomplish not only the satisfaction of riding a bike on our own, but also the freedom to explore the world around us and create our own adventures. Look back for a minute on the miles of smiles, friends and unforgettable experiences that all began with that moment. What an impact it sure had on your life.
What if we could give that gift to an unsuspecting child, a child facing adversity and major challenges in their life? What if we could give them a gift - in addition to a new bike - of unconditional love? A message that no matter what, there are people in this world, in your own community, who are here to help and support you. Imagine the journey that this might set them on....
We have launched a new venture, a non-profit called Bikes for Birthdays, where we can give the opportunity to change the course of a child's life by simply making a small donation. Please take a minute to check out our website and watch the short video. Once each child is funded, we go out and buy them a bike and some basic equipment. The bike is delivered on their birthday, with a special message in a card "signed" by all of those who contributed. Please note this is our initial goal...we are expecting to do much more with this program in the future as we are sure it will be successful and put a smile on many faces.
Thank you for taking the time to check out our program.

For Sale: Ay-up Complete Lighting System
I am selling my Ay-Up complete lighting system because I got a new kit for a gift. I used these lights for night MTB rides. They provide plenty of light to have a wonderful night ride. The light is bright and clear. You can read about Ay-Up lights here: http://www.ayup-lights.com/
These lights are also very good for road riding commuters. The kit has tons of stuff. 3 batteries for all occasions, chargers (including car), mounts and etc. The kits retail for $380+shipping brand new. The batteries last a long time. I've never had my lights run out of juice on a night ride. $150 is the price so don't send me messages with other offers. The lights are guaranteed for life and practically indestructible.
