SDBC Weekly Update

Amazon Smile

Do you shop at Amazon.com? If so, it’s easy for you to help SDBC receive donations from Amazon to SDBC. Just use the “Amazon Smile” charitable process in your account. Amazon Smile funnels a small percentage of their eligible purchase revenue to SDBC if you activate Amazon Smile in your account and choose “San Diego Bicycle Club” as the beneficiary nonprofit.

Instead of logging in through "amazon.com" you log-in through “smile.amazon.com.”  Very easy to use. It is EXACTLY the same shopping experience.  Nothing changes except SDBC receives contributions from Amazon.

Have you Moved in the last year?

If so, please email your new address to

  Thank you.

2018 SDBC Sponsors

We have several new sponsors this year - Mission Federal Credit Union is our official sponsor of the SDBC Bike Safety Rodeo & helmet giveaway program, Liquid Solana Beach, our Saturday ride coffeee stop (AKA Solana Beach Coffee Company), and ROKA a perfomance design company that designs and sells performance eyewear, apparel & equipment.

Emerald Textiles will continue as our title sponsor, UC Cyclery is continuing as our official bike club and sponsor of the men's and women's Cat 1/2 teams, and all of our sponsors that supported us last year will continue to support us this year.

Please support our sponsors. Without them SDBC would not be able to maintain the racing teams and other activities that we have all enjoyed. Visit the sponsors page on the SDBC web site to view more information about each of our sponsors or click the logos to go the specific sponsor's web site.

Interested in advertising with us? Please email our Sponsorship Director for details.

The deadline for Weekly Update submissions is Noon on Wednesday. Updates are published on Thursdays. Email submissions to weekly@sdbc.org Submissions can include anything from photos to race reports and results, etc.

Classifieds for bikes and cycling related gear can be submitted by any SDBC member. Your add will run for three weeks. In the event you have not sold your items at the end of three weeks you can re-submit the ad. Email your classified submissions to weekly@sdbc.org. A Note From the President

San Diego Bicycle Club

Kids’ Bikes Needed

To promote cycling, teach basic safety skills, and raise the visibility of our club, we're expanding SDBC's "Kid’s Bike Rodeo Program".  Did you know that many kids who show up at our rodeos do not own bikes?  That’s why we need two or three basic kids bikes for them to ride at the rodeos.  No gearing, just basic bikes.  Age of most rodeo kids are 5-12 so we need bikes of various sizes.  Bikes do NOT need to be beautiful, but should be in good working condition.  We will not be giving these bikes away, but using them at each of the rodeos.

We did two rodeos last year, in the next four weeks we’re doing three!  By the end of the year we expect to have done 10.  So if you have an old unused kid's bike in the garage we will put it to good use.  And it’s tax deductible since we’re a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

Please contact Barb Trenchi, our Bike Rodeo Coordinator at 619-723-4259 or at btrenchi@yahoo.com.

Thanks!

Mike McLaughlin
SDBC President

A Note From the Special Events Director
San Diego Bicycle ClubClick to visit sponsor's site in new window

Mission Federal Credit Union has given SDBC tickets for the Padres game against the Mets on Fri April 27th at 7:10 pm. Before the game MFCU will present SDBC with a check to sponsor the helmet give aways throughout the year. It'll be one of those larger-than-life checks and the San Diego Fox station will be covering the presentation.

We will give those tickets to SDBC members on a first come basis. This is just another benefit of your SDBC membership. You can bring  a partner too. See Rod Stubbs at the Saturday ride on 4/14 to get your tickets.

A Note From The Bike Coalition Liaison

San Diego Bicycle ClubSDCBC Logo

Safety tip of the week - don't get hit!

Bike-car crashes fall into two main categories:

  1. Cyclist primarily at fault.
  2. Motorist primarily at fault.

Different studies vary on how the distribution falls out, but it's probably around 50/50, and doesn't really matter.

As cyclists we have to still do these two things:

  1. Don't do things that make you at fault.
  2. Ride defensively so you don't get hit even when it's the motorist's fault.

Examples:

  1. DON'T BE AT FAULT: Obey traffic controls, use lights at night, ride on the right half of road (don't salmon), don't move laterally without looking back first, don't swerve when you look back, negotiate for right of way and wait for yielding before moving laterally, use through lanes (not right turn lanes) for going straight, etc.
  2. BE DEFENSIVE: Use conspicuous attention-grabbing predictable lane positioning, use release position in bike lane or at road edge only when necessary and safe, avoid door zones, look for red light or stop sign runners before entering intersection, adjust speed/timing to avoid left cross threat, don't pass vehicles on the right even if you're in a bike lane (slow down if someone ahead slows down - don't pass on the right!), don't let the paint think for you, use a mirror, etc.

Comments, questions or suggestions? Let me know.

Serge Issakov
Bike Coalition liaison
